The access-point light stays green. The laptop still shows a strong network name. The director’s face, however, has stopped mid-blink and the audio has gone thin. Staff then reboot the laptop, which sometimes helps for ten minutes because it briefly empties a queue.
Video is greedier than voice. A frozen frame is often the meeting app waiting for packets that are sitting behind a large file upload, a backup, or four other cameras in the same room. The Wi-Fi name is still correct. The airtime is not.
On a floor in Bangsar we watched a “fine” network drop every camera whenever Accounts opened a shared drive at 15:30. Voice calls in the same room merely sounded metallic. The path was one access point, one overloaded uplink, and a meeting culture that put six cameras on at once “so it feels like we are there.”
Uplink is the usual surprise. Downloads can still feel snappy while the small voice and video packets trying to leave the building are delayed. A speed test toward a nearby server will not show that. A live conversation will.
Before moving the router to a new shelf, try one meeting with cameras off except the speaker. If the freeze disappears, the path may still be weak, but the immediate load is the extra video. That is a cheaper first experiment than a new contract.
If the freeze remains with cameras off, the next question is whether the same thing happens on a phone using mobile data in the car park. When the car park is clean and the meeting room is not, the building is the suspect, not Zoom.
